It seems to be that time of year again. If you’ve ever driven in Central New York, I’m sure you have either had a close encounter or an actual encounter with a deer that ran out in front of your car.I know several folks who have had some pretty nasty accidents from hitting the deer. Knock on wood, I’ve never hit one, and on the road that I live in, there are plenty of deer frolicking about, especially during these fall months which is breeding season. Of course it helps you when you are alert. I try to keep my eyes extra peeled during the times where I drive in the evening or early morning. Here are some safety tips to follow when you are out and about this season:

  1. Wear seat belts and follow the posted speed limits. They are there for a reason.
  2. Use extra caution around where you see deer crossing signs.
  3. Early morning and early evening are times of high risk.
  4. If you see one deer, chances are there are more around.
  5. Don’t count on deer deterrence devices on vehicles.
  6. Use high beams where you can, that way you can see far ahead of you.
  7. Don’t swerve to avoid hitting a deer, your first instinct is to do so. If you are going to hit it, at least you will be in control of your vehicle.
  8. Avoid braking when you hit a deer, that way the deer is more likely to pass under the car instead of hitting the windshield.
  9. Report deer collisions to your local authorities.
  10. Stay alert, awake, and sober.
