I absolutely love going to the fair…the main reason?  The food, of course.  I always make it a point to stop by the Dinosaur BBQ stand.  Just one of my few guilty pleasures.

Look around, though, just about anything and everything imaginable, can be battered and deep fried.  I finally got the chance to try to deep fried Oreos at the Herkimer County fair.  Where have these things been all my life?  Don’t forget to top them with some powdered sugar.  The young man that sold them to me, made sure to point that out.  Turned out to be a great idea.

Ribeye steak sandwiches, sausage and peppers, gyros, chicken on a stick, funnel cakes, cotton candy, candied apples, fresh roasted corn, the list goes on and on.

But look out!  There is a pretty good chance that you could get sick.  According to the Centers for Disease Control, the number of people getting sick from food poisoning, goes up drastically during fair season.

The good news is I’ve got the scoop on how you can keep yourself from being one of those getting sick.  Maybe.  Read carefully…

Best thing to do when you purchase food from a vendor or mobile unit (they are not just at fairs), watch exactly how your food is prepared.  If something looks, well, not entirely right, chances are it isn’t.  This is mainly because many of these carts are operated by less experienced kids working a summer job.

The good thing is, fairs are regulated by the Department of Public Health, so you know they are in full force to make sure your fair goodies are good to go, but it never hurts to make sure you keep an eye on how your food is being prepared.  If you look, you will see that most of these vendors are in full view to show you how your food is prepared.

Hope to see you at the Great New York State Fair!
