According to the website NewYorkHotels.org, there are 4 areas here in Upstate New York where lodging during July or August will make a dent in your vacation budget.  Six of the ten most costly places in state are in the New York City/Long Island area, and the other four are upstate.

Saratoga Springs is the most-expensive summer destination in Upstate New York.  The cheapest hotel room in that area averages $268 per night.  That may be due to the horse racing season which runs from July 22nd to Labor Day.   Many concerts are also booked for that time period at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

Next on the list of upstate destinations is Geneva, where the cheapest hotel averages $189 per night.  An overnight stay in Niagara Falls will cost you $179 a night at the least expensive hotel, and if you choose to stay-over in Lake George, the most-reasonable hotel you will find averages $156 per night.

By the way, Midtown Manhattan is not the most expensive place to stay in the state.  That distinction goes to East Hampton, where the least expensive hotel found was $324 per night during the summer months.
