Usually, the coldest place in the country distinction is given to Mt. Washington, New Hampshire.  However, their low was reported at a minus 23 degrees at 5 a.m. today, one degree warmer than the Tug Hill town.

The weather observer told the Post Standard that temperatures dipping far below zero are nothing unusual in that area.  Highmarket is also in an area that sees frequent "lake effect" snow, and has already has had 88 inches so far this season.
