Major changes are on the way if you own a drone or plan on buying one.

Soon everyone one who owns a drone will have to register the aircraft with the government. NBC reports the government has been concerned about the rise in close calls between unmanned drones and aircraft flying into and out of some of the nation's biggest airports. Drones were also blamed for hampering aerial firefighting efforts over a California blaze while pilots of passenger planes and other aircraft are now reporting more than 100 sightings or close calls with rogue drones a month.

The Washington Post reports: regulators hope that forcing owners — many of whom are aviation novices — to register their drones with the government will at least make them think twice about their responsibility to fly safely and the possibility that they could be held accountable for an accident.

The drone industry will work with the government to set up a structure to register the drones and could be in place by Christmas.
