As a 10-year-old in Florida, he met Elvis Presley on a film set and his interest in rock and roll began. He traded in his Wham-O slingshot for a collection of Elvis 45s. When Tom Petty saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show he knew he had to be in a band. His father didn't take the news well. The relationship turned tumultuous, and Tom was subjected to physical and verbal abuse.
