Bullying has been in the news a lot lately, with plenty of advice for kids who are having problems but what about adults?

According to the USA Weekend statistics show that one in six adults experiences bullying at work.Workplace bullying is not necessarily illegal and may not even be against a company's regulations but experts say the damage to workplace morale is clear.

Here are some tips to battle the problem of on-the-job bullying:

  • Recognize the problem. Understand that you don't have to put up with the abuse just because you're an employee.
  • Keep records. Keep a log and make copies of threatening e-mail so you can prove your case.
  • Report the problem to a manager. Find someone higher up who doesn't know the bully well and can be objective.
  • Don't rely on HR to help. Most companies don't have bullying policies and may side with the boss.
