The Real Name For These Creepy Crawlers In Your Home

Have you ever been walking through your apartment and came across one of these hideous creatures? This massive, centipede-looking, freak-show is quick, and creepy. The one thing people have a hard time figuring out however, is what it is exactly. No matter what it's name is, you better kill it quick. These things are fast, and if you don't finish the job they'll be back.

Many people have referred to the fuzzy, multi-leg creature as a silver fish, or member of the silver fish family. They are actually referred to simply as "house centipedes." Their scientific name is "Scutigera coleoptrata Centipedes." According to an article from Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences,

Most centipedes can be found under boards, logs, rocks and other protected, damp locations outside. These centipedes are of little concern to homeowners. The house centipede, believed to have originated in the Mediterranean region, was introduced into Mexico and the Southern United States and has increased its distribution. It was first recorded in Pennsylvania in 1849. Today, the house centipede can be found in many buildings throughout the United States. It does not survive winters outdoors in Pennsylvania, but readily reproduces in heated structures.

The article goes on to talk about the physical description of these household friends. Despite their somewhat threatening nature, being quick and mysterious, many feared the bug. The truth is they're quite harmless. That doesn't change the fact they look hideous. Most of these centipedes won't make it through the winter, so you'll see them more frequently in the summer months. If you see one you can either kill it, or let it be. It certainly won't attack you while you're sleeping. Just remember before you turn on a light in a dark room, that you may encounter the very strange house centipede!
