The ugly Christmas sweater is a huge part of the holiday season for some of us. Ever wonder how the trend of donning these fashion statements all got started?

According to TIME Magazine, Bill Cosby was one of the first to set the trend of wearing sweaters at any time of the year. Between him and Chevy Chase in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, the trend took off in the 1980's for the holidays, but faded out in the early 90's.

In the last decade or so, the trend of the ugly Christmas sweater quickly picked up again, becoming one of the most popular theme for holiday parties. The trend became very hipster and you can pick up your own ugly sweater at just about any vintage store, thrift shop, or even high-end fashion shops.

You can't deny the warm and fuzzy feeling you get while wearing one. It might just be the feeling of the holidays, or all that eggnog, but the ugly Christmas sweater has taken its place alongside kissing under the mistletoe, fruitcakes, and other holiday traditions.
