Actually NTSB never officially closed this case. After receiving a letter (according to CNN) from aviation enthusiast L.J. Coon, a self-described retired pilot and aircraft dispatcher, asking NTSB to look at other possible contributing factors to the crash. They include the aircraft's weight and balance calculations (for passengers, baggage and fuel), possible issues with rudder panels and possible carburetor Induction icing. No word is really expected on a new investigation until  2016.

Don Mclean wrote and recorded this song. He dedicated it Buddy Holly but has never discussed the lyrics. He leaves that up to us to figure out and a lot of people try to do that. Here is just one example.

When you research everything thing that happened that day alone, it really makes you think about fate. What if this and what if that. There are stories of coin flips and who really one, people sick and taking buses instead of the plane. Buddy Holly's wife was pregnant and after the plane crash lost the baby. She blames herself for his death saying if she was with him he would not have been on the plane. Was a gun involved (no)?

I don't know what a further investigation will turn up. Maybe the pilot wasn't at fault. Time will tell. Or maybe not.
