Today is National Grilled Cheese Day, which is the perfect excuse to enjoy one of those delicious sandwiches. Here's a few ways to make that classic sandwich even better...

Now, there's nothing wrong with a plain grilled cheese sandwich. Add some tomato soup and there's just something so "comforting" about it. But, in honor of National Grilled Cheese Day, we want to give you some options to make that sandwich a masterpiece... Or something like that.

Let's Start with the Cheese

Kraft American Singles are a staple of classic grilled cheese sandwiches (I think that's one of Kraft's selling points). But why not try some other types of cheese?
-Pepper jack: This will give your sandwich a nice spicy kick.
-Mozzarella: Perfect for that ooey, gooey sandwich.
-Sharp Cheddar: For that bite with your cheese.
-Swiss: Which is great if you add ham to your sandwich as well.
-Provolone and Cheddar Jack: Amazing. But you have to use both of them together.
-Pretty much any kind of cheese you love... BUT: If you use a cheese that doesn't melt well (like feta cheese), you may want to start with another cheese as your base, and sprinkle your loved cheese on top.

Add-Ins to That Sandwich

More is always better, right?! So wouldn't more toppings and ingredients make your grilled cheese better? We think so. Maybe try some of these delicious add-ins...
-Bacon: Everything is better with bacon. This includes grilled cheese.
-Tomato: It makes your sandwich healthy.
-Sliced Peppers: From red and green peppers, to a spicy kick of a jalapeno. Or you can get really crazy and throw in some habanero peppers if you're into that.
-Deli Meats: Ham is the one people usually add-in, but have you ever had a grilled cheese with salami? Roast beef is really good, too.
-Sliced Chicken Tenders: Because why not? Make it spicy with buffalo chicken tenders.
-Broccoli: Cheese and broccoli go so good together as it is, why not put them together between two slices of bread?
-Avocado: If you really like avocado, you'll like this one... Trust us.

If You're Really Daring

Do you REALLY want to spice up your grilled cheese? Do you want to take your grilled cheese to the ultimate sandwich level? If so, then one of these ideas may be more up your alley...
Hawaiian Grilled Cheese: It's Swiss cheese, ham and a slice of pineapple. Delicious.
Add in Pretzels: That's right, pretzels. Don't cook it too long though, those pretzels need to stay nice and crunchy.
Taco Grilled Cheese: It's ground beef, cheddar cheese, tomato, lettuce, taco sauce and jalapeno peppers. Don't forget the tortilla strips (but add them in at the very end).
Add in Apples: The sourness of Granny Smith apples work the best. Again, don't put the apple in too early, you don't want it to get soggy.
Peeps Grilled Cheese: It's exactly what it sounds like, marshmallow peeps inside a grilled cheese sandwich. This is the daring section after all.
Thanksgiving Grilled Cheese: Complete with turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes. You can use gravy as a dip (instead of the classic tomato soup).
Spaghetti Grilled Cheese: People swear by this one. Just use some leftover spaghetti in your sandwich. Don't forget the cheddar cheese AND Parmesan cheese.

Well, we think that's enough ideas to at least get you started. Plus you can go as big or small as you want. Add in bacon or turn your grilled cheese into a monster with peeps inside of it. Whatever you choose, we hope you celebrate National Grilled Cheese Day with a delicious grilled cheese sandwich. Enjoy!
