Central New York meet Mr. Howard Shriver. He's a WWII veteran who served in the Marianas Islands and the Philippines. He lives in an assisted living facility in Marietta, Ohio. He is celebrating his 98th birthday on July 12th. Let's help make his birthday memorable.
Last year, hundreds of people from the Mohawk Valley gathered to watch a friendly softball game between local first-responders and the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team (WWAST). The veterans played in order to educate and inspire the crowd that they were still capable of this kind of athletic ability and show how beneficial physical therapy can be.
July 26, 2015, the eagle atop the World War II monument at Veterans Park in the Village of New York Mills was stolen. Now, just in time for Memorial Day a new eagle has been dedicated in New York Mills.
Mental health is one of the biggest issues facing our nation and in most cases it's a significant issue for our men and women who return home from war. David Fletcher is a 55-year-old Army veteran who served in the first Gulf War. David has fallen on some hard times and is now faced with an ankle injury leaving him unable to work or pay for most of his bills. Hopefully the community can come to his assistance.
Paul Fortin is a 69-year-old Boonville, NY resident who is also a Vietnam Veteran. Paul remains very active and is about to embark on an incredible journey for an amazing cause. On February 9th Paul will journey on a nine-day expedition to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa to support the Sitrin Health Care Center’s Military Rehabilitation Program.
Tony Longretta is a former Utica resident who loves taking photos. He's actually really good at it. On a recent trip home, he took some amazing shots of some of the most beautiful landmarks in our fine city. He and a friend, Daniel Mellito, decided to sell the collection of photos in a calendar and give the proceeds to The CNY Veteran's Outreach Center.
For the entire month of November, the Rome Historical Society will be sponsoring a letter writing campaign for Operation Gratitude. These letters will be sent out to deployed troops, veterans, new recruits, and wounded warriors.
