Syracuse Orange Suffocate Indiana Hoosiers To Advance To Elite 8

The Syracuse Orange used a suffocating defense and selective shooting to upend the East Region’s top seed to advance to the Elite 8 with a 61-50 victory over the Indiana Hoosiers.

It was an unlikely star who stepped forward for the fourth-seeded Orange. Michael Carter Williams seemed to thrive on the big stage, setting a career high with 24 points to go along with four assists, six rebounds against just two turnovers. Brandon Triche added 14 points and C.J. Fair had another well balanced 11 point, eight rebound effort.

The ‘Cuse defense forced 17 Hoosier turnovers, including a dozen in the first half, building an 18 point lead. Indiana battled back late in the opening half, and continued with a flurry to start the second to pull within six.

But, Syracuse was able to contain IU’s offensive attack, holding Victor Oladip and Cody Zeeler to a combined 26 points. Overall, Indiana shot just 34% percent for the game.

The Orange shot 43% overall.

This sets up a conference clash for a visit to the final four as Jim Boeheim will have a chance to avenge an ugly loss to Marquette earlier this season, as Syracuse looks to make its first trip back to the Final Four since winning the tourney in 2003.

Marquette, a three seed, beat East Region No.2 Maimi 71-61.

The Orange and Golden Eagles will meet on Saturday in Washington, D.C.
