It's time to start thinking spring....cleaning that is. Most of know where to recycle household items and gently-used clothing for donations, but what to do with those old, worn out clothes that can't be passed along?

Maybe you have a few drawers or closets filled with old clothes that are too far gone to be donated to places like the Salvation Army.

You probably have very little time to turn to Pinterest for artsy crafty ideas on how to turn your old jeans into a lamp, but instead of just throwing them in the trash, here's how you can recycle them.

The Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority has a program in place that will take your old clothing and accessories as well.

The ReClothe NY textile recycling program accepts most used clothing, footwear and accessories such as:

  • Old Clothes - all items should be clean and dry; rips, stains, missing buttons, broken zippers are OKAY
  • All footwear
  • Accessories such as hats, gloves, scarves, pocketbooks, duffle bags, belts and ties
  • Linens: sheets, blankets, comforters, towels, throw rugs, draperies, table linens
  • Stuffed Animals

These items can be dropped off at several locations throughout Central New York:

  • Bridgewater - Bridgewater Congregational Church
  • Boonville - Boonville Alliance Church
  • Chadwicks - St. Patrick's/St. Anthony's Catholic Church
  • Clinton - Life in Christ Family Church
  • Marcy - Assembly of God
  • New Hartford - New Hartford First UMC
  • Rome - New Day Foursquare Gospel Church
  • Rome - Rome Rescue Mission
  • Sauquoit - Sauquoit Valley United Methodist Church
  • Utica - Living Stones Church
  • Utica - Our Lady of Lourdes
  • Utica - Utica Rescue Mission & Holy Trinity Church
  • Utica - West Schuyler United Methodist Church
  • Vernon - Church of the Holy Family
  • Verona - Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel
  • Whitesboro - Trinity United Methodist Church
  • West Winfield - St. Joseph's Church

The Goodwill location in Herkimer on N. Caroline street will also accept your old and worn out clothing.

All you have to do is drop off your bags at their store during or after store hours. If dropping off after hours, Goodwill has donation bins at the back of the store.

Goodwill does ask that if you're dropping off clothing to be recycled rather than re-sold simply attach a note to your items that says 'salvage' or 'rags.'

This way the employees know that everything is worn out beyond use and they can simply send it off to the recycling center.

Now that you have all that space from recycling your old clothes, the only question is what are you going to do with it?
