In news that will surely ignite all kinds of controversy, a new Spider-Man rumor has arrived on the internet suggesting that the new Peter Parker will not be played by a white guy. In fact, he could be played by (gasp!) a black or Latino actor! And, he might not even be Peter Parker! Yeah, a take a moment to prepare yourself. If this is true, it will mark a brave and wonderful step forward for Marvel, Sony, and superhero movies in general.

The rumor arrives courtesy of The Wrap writer Jeff Sneider, who talked about the plans for Spider-Man on an episode of the Meet the Movie Press podcast (via Slashfilm). Although we should take everything he says with a grain of salt until we hear something official (let’s engage in the movie rumor game responsibly, okay?), he seems fairly certain that Spider-Man won’t be a man of the Causcasian persuasion. 95% certain, actually:

Listen, this is not set in stone guys, but I’m telling you right now, Spider-Man’s not going to be white. Spider-Man’s not going to be white. I’m 95% sure. Spider-Man’s going to be most likely black. But there’s a chance he could also be Latino. 95% sure, not white.

Since Spidey’s race is literally the least important thing about him, this is welcome news. Under that mask, he’s a smart kid from a poor family living in New York city with a thing for wisecracks. There is nothing about him that demands he be a white guy. Peter Parker’s whiteness is purely a reflection of the time in which he was created and nothing more. So if you ask us, bring on more ethnically diverse superhero movies!

Although we certainly wouldn’t care if the new Peter Parker was black or hispanic, Sneider himself thinks that the new Spidey won’t be Parker at all. Although he doesn’t directly say so, he implies that Sony and Marvel are working to bring the character of Miles Morales to the screen in his stead.

For those who don’t know, Miles is the Spider-Man from the Marvel “Ultimate” comics line (which is a completely different universe than the rest of the Marvel universe), a young half black, half Latino kid who has his own unfortunate run-in with a radioactive spider and learns all about great power and great responsibility and so on. He’s a terrific character: different enough from Peter Parker to be his own man while still maintaining all of the qualities you want in a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

Peter Parker has been the subject of five increasingly dire movies, so there’s no reason to not give Miles Morales a chance on the big screen. What’s the worse that can happen? Some racists will get mad. That’s about it. Everyone else is going to go see whatever movie he’s in anyway.

The new Spider-Man is expected to make his debut in Captain America: Civil War before getting his own solo movie in 2017.
