Focus Interactive’s upcoming game, Space Hulk: Deathwing, set in the War Hammer 40K universe, received an in-engine trailer today, showcasing the game’s impressive graphical capabilities.

Space Hulk: Deathwing is the long-awaited sequel to 1993’s Space Hulk, a real-time tactical FPS that tasked players with controlling a team of Space Marines as they explored the husk of a burned out spacecraft to eliminate the Tyranid threat. The upcoming game will allow players to control only one character, but teammates will presumably be controlled by the computer or by online squad-mates.

In the trailer, elite Space Marines, called Deathwings, slowly make their way through a Space Hulk (a massive, destroyed spacecraft drifting through space) before dealing with a small team of Tyranid Genestealers. After they mow down the alien creatures with Storm Bolters and Assault Cannons, they have a moment of rest before a massive Genestealer makes his appearance. Rendered entirely in the game’s engine, the trailer is very nice looking, with excellent lighting effects that convey a sense of claustrophobia and highly detailed representations of the famous Terminator Armor. We still haven’t seen any actual gameplay footage from Space Hulk: Deathwing yet, but based on what we see here, it should be a gorgeous game.

Focus Interactive is best known for their recent action-RPG, Bound by Flame, which was met with mixed critical reception and commercial indifference, and their similarly underwhelming 2012 Game of Thrones action-RPG, so despite the pretty visuals in the trailer, we’re wary of the final product’s promise. The developer has never worked on a FPS game before, making Focus an odd choice for the job. Fortunately, they are being bolstered by two other teams, Cyanide Studios and Streum On Studio, as well as Games Workshop, the owners of the Warhammer franchise, so we’ll withhold judgment until we see some actual gameplay footage.
