Our friends down at the Southern Tier Brewing Company have been extra busy this winter preparing 3 new beers for Spring and Summer. They just posted the new brews on their website, and we have the full details inside today's Beer Break. Introducing for 2013 Southern Tier 2X Steam, Southern Tier Compass Sparkling Ale, and Southern Tier Plum Noir Imperial Porter.

Southern Tier 2X Steam Stats

2xSteam is a few clicks to be over 8% abv. Clearly this is an unusual take on an unusual style. Southern Tier is saying that this is extra tasty with cheddar cheeses, grilled chicken, salmon, salads, light desserts like shortcake, and shortbread cookies. According to our friends over at Beer Pulse, This will be available during Spring and Summer, and the draught is now available.

Southern Tier Compass Sparkling Ale Facts

How did they make this?

We rely on age-old tools in the brewery despite being surrounded by high technology. As a sort of compass, we use the six pointed brewer’s star to help navigate uncharted brews. The cardinal directions of water, malt, grain, yeast, hops and brewer make the baseline. From there, anything goes. Sometimes the journey is as important as the destination."

This beer is best enjoed with sharp cheddar cheese, roasted turkey, beef, and something I wouldn't think to mix beer with, Thai food. This will be available during Spring and Summer, and the draught is now available.

Southern Tier Plum Noir Imperial Porter Facts

I wouldn't think plums and beer should ever mix, but this next beer is a classic. Have you ever heard of the Prunus cocomilia plum? That's what our friends used to brew this classic.

The Italian plum has beautiful dark skin color and the flesh is perfect for fermentation. We’ll add puréed plums directly to the fermenter where they will add another fermentable component– their residual sugar. The beer will be dry, and have a sweetness derived mainly from the type of malts we use. A bit of the plum flavor will still be present, and it will have a slightly less roasty character than our imperial stouts have had."
