I’ve never been a big fan of leftovers. I really should be better about eating them, though. I really hate to see food wasted, and it’s not setting a good example for my children. However, there are some foods out there that you should never reheat.

Reheating some of these foods is putting you and your family at risk for illness, so think twice about popping some of these in the microwave the next day.

Beets – I won’t worry about this one because I’m not a big fan of beets to begin with, but beets contain nitrate, which is good for us, but not good when reheated.

Chicken – This one always makes me nervous no matter what. I’ve seen too many cases of food poisoning from chicken over the years. For me, I’ll eat chicken cold before I reheat it. Chicken has protein which could cause digestive issues if those proteins are reheated.

Potatoes – To me, these are never good reheated anyway, these things can become toxic when reheated.

Mushrooms – You should always eat mushrooms right away as they contain proteins that change somewhat quickly. Throw these out unless you like making extra trips to the bathroom.

Spinach – Popeye ate it right out of the can, he never reheated it, or heated it for that matter. Once again, there are those nitrates, just like in beets, they are not good to be reheated.

Eggs – High protein and should not be reheated. Are they good reheated anyway? I think not.

Celery – Like some of the other veggies. If you have this in your soup, maybe remove it before you reheat that soup.

We tend to take for granted of how nice it is to have modern appliances like the microwave that will allow us to stretch our food a little longer, but make sure you are doing it safely so you can avoid those sick days from work.
