Sledgehammer Wants Advanced Warfare to be as Revolutionary as COD: Modern Warfare

Sledgehammer Games hopes Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will revolutionize the COD series just like the first Modern Warfare title did.

Total Xbox reports that Sledgehammer Games is hoping Advanced Warfare will recreate the groundbreaking reception and turnaround that the first Modern Warfare had for the Call of Duty franchise. Much like Medal of Honor, the Call of Duty franchise was stuck in the past, primarily set in a World War II setting until Jason West, Vince Zampella and their team at Infinity Ward (now at Titanfall’s Respawn Entertainment), took the FPS series to the present. Now, Sledgehammer Games is hoping to capture that same lightning in a bottle.

“We looked back at the history of Call of Duty, and I don’t know if you remember when Modern Warfare came out, for those of us in the industry who weren’t at Activision at the time, it really blew us away,” said Sledgehammer co-founder Glen Schofield. “To us it really ushered in a new era of Call of Duty. It puts you in the shoes of a Tier 1 soldier, in the Middle East – it was realistic, the sound, the audio, the look of it was just unbelievable.”

“We wanted to try and capture that same feeling in this game.”

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare’s Exosuit, futuristic locales and imaginative weaponry are the new features Sledgehammer hopes will help take the game to a Modern Warfare level of success.

“The full three years gave us the time to develop the technology, to focus on the creative, to do the research, to really maximise the experience, and again to push this new generation, to get every last ounce of horsepower out of it, and not to be in any way constrained by tech or in terms of ideas, by the previous generation of hardware.”

We’ll see if Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare lives up to its modern cohorts when it launches on Nov. 4 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4.
