This past weekend saw a great loss for the acting community, as House of Cards and Fantastic Four star Reg E. Cathey passed away of lung cancer. The actor filmed several projects prior to his passing, including a previously-unrevealed key role in the second season of Marvel’s Luke Cage.

Marvel confirmed as much in the wake of Cathey’s death, noting that the Netflix star will appear in Season 2 as James Lucas, Luke’s father. It isn’t immediately clear if the appearance will take place in flashback or present-day, but Marvel does describe Cathey’s role as the actor’s “final performance”:

Everyone at Marvel Television is deeply saddened by the loss of Reg E. Cathey. It was an honor to work with him and to know him. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends.

In ‘Marvel’s Luke Cage’ Season 2, Reg played James Lucas, Luke’s father. We were lucky enough to experience the magic that was Reg in his final performance.

The appearance serves as an MCU homecoming of sorts for Cathey, who played another famous Marvel hero’s father, Franklin Storm, in the 2015 Fantastic Four reboot. Luke Cage star Mike Colter also hinted at having worked with Cathey before Marvel’s announcement:

Elsewhere of Luke Cage Season 2, we know Mustafa Shakir will play Bushmaster alter-ego John McIver, while Gabrielle Dennis will take the role of Tilda Johnson (Nightshade in the books). Simone Missick will be back as Misty Knight, along with Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple, Alfre Woodard as Mariah Dillard and Theo Rossi as Shades. Finn Jones will reprise his role as Marvel’s Iron Fist, while Lucy Liu will take up directorial duties.

Luke Cage Season 2 is expected to premiere this summer, following Jessica Jones in March. Stay tuned for the latest in the meantime.
