Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling is in hot water for making racist comments. TMZ first released the tape where he’s heard telling his girlfriend V. Stiviano not to ‘bring black people to his games,’ including Magic Johnson.
Sterling goes on to ask ‘Why are you taking pictures with minorities? It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you’re associating with black people. Do you have to? You can sleep with [black people]. You can bring them in, you can do whatever you want. The little I ask you is not to promote it on that and not to bring them to my games.‘
Magic Johnson has spoken out about the remarks and is interested in buying the team according to Yahoo Sports.
‘You can’t understand how hurt I was. I was hurt for fall African Americans and minorities. Donald Sterling has had issues in the past. For him to make these alleged comments about myself and others, there’s no place in our society for it. There’s no place in our league because we all get along. We all play with different races of people in sports. That’s what makes sports so beautiful. He’s put his own team in a tough situation. He shouldn’t own a team anymore. This is bad for everybody.’
Attention All Media: I'm not doing anymore interviews about Donald Sterling.

President Barack Obama addressed the issue, saying ‘When ignorant folks want to advertise their ignorance, you really don’t have to do anything, you just let them talk. I have confidence the NBA commissioner will address this. Obviously the NBA is a league that is beloved by fans all across the country. It’s got a lot of African American players and steeped in African American culture. I suspect the NBA is going to be deeply concerned in resolving this. The United States continues to wrestle with the legacy of race. That’s still there. We’ve made enormous strides but you’re going to continue to see this every so often. We just have to be clear and steady in denouncing it and teaching our children differently. Part of why statements like this stand out so much, there has been a shift in how we view ourselves.‘

A number of current and former players have spoken out including Michael Jordon and Lebron James.
Michael Jordan also released a statement:
‘As an owner, I’m obviously disgusted that a fellow team owner could hold such sickening and offensive views.I’m confident that Adam Silver will make a full investigation and take appropriate action quickly. As a former player, I’m completely outraged. There is no room in the NBA — or anywhere else — for the kind of racism and hatred that Mr. Sterling allegedly expressed. I am appalled that this type of ignorance still exists within our country and at the highest levels of our sport. In a league where the majority of players are African-American, we cannot and must not tolerate discrimination at any level.’
Lebron James statement:
‘There’s no room for Donald Sterling in the NBA – there is no room for him. Obviously, if the reports are true it’s unacceptable in our league. It doesn’t matter, white, black or Hispanic – all across the races it’s unacceptable. As the commissioner of our league they have to make a stand. They have to be very aggressive with it. I don’t know what it will be, but we can’t have that in our league. We’re the model citizen of all sports around the world because we are the most recognizable figures. … It’s very disrespectful and it’s appalling. I have kind of wavered back and forth if I would actually sit out. If our owner would come out and say the things he said I would have to sit down with my teammates and talk to my family because at the end of the day, our family and teammates are way more important than that,. Basketball is huge and the playoffs have been unbelievable so far and I hate that something has to come out. I can only imagine if a player came out and said something of that stature what would happen to us as players. I believe in Adam (Silver) and I believe in the NBA and they have to do something very fast before this really gets out of hand. But like I said there is no room for Donald Sterling in our league.’
The Clippers owner Andy Roeser even released a statement:
‘We have heard the tape on TMZ. We do not know if it is legitimate or it has been altered. We do know that the woman on the tape — who we believe released it to TMZ — is the defendant in a lawsuit brought by the Sterling family alleging that she embezzled more than $1.8 million, who told Mr. Sterling that she would “get even.” Mr. Sterling is emphatic that what is reflected on that recording is not consistent with, nor does it reflect his views, beliefs or feelings. It is the antithesis of who he is, what he believes and how he has lived his life. He feels terrible that such sentiments are being attributed to him, and apologizes to anyone who might have been hurt by them. He is also upset and apologizes for sentiments attributed to him about Earvin Johnson. He has long considered Magic a friend, and has only the utmost respect and admiration for him — both in terms of who he is and what he has achieved. We are investigating this matter.’
The NAACP had planned to honor Sterling in May with a lifetime achievement award. Lorraine C. Miller, the NAACP’s interim president and CEO, said that’s no longer the case. ‘Let me make it clear, the NAACP will not be honoring Mr. Sterling at the upcoming Los Angeles branch event and we have strongly urged our Los Angeles unit to take the necessary steps to rescind the previous award they bestowed on him.’

I also wouldn't put on that jersey with Sterling still as the owner.

Isn’t this 2014? I can’t believe there are still people with these beliefs! In the words of William Shakespeare ‘If you prick us do we not bleed? If you tickle us do we not laugh? If you poison us do we not die? And if you wrong us shall we not revenge?‘ The color of someone’s skin should NOT be an issue in today’s day and age.
