Possible Vinyl Chloride Chemical Spill Reported In New Jersey

Paulsboro Train Wreck

Our friends in New Jersey never seem to get a break. First Hurricane Sandy, and not this. There are reports that four tank cars from a train wreck were dumped into Mantua Creek in Paulsboro, New Jersey on Friday (11/30). There are reports that they are leaking vinyl chloride.

Gloucester County emergency personnel are not evacuating the area abut residents are urged to stay indoors with windows and doors closed. The EPA says short term exposure to high levels of vinyl chloride in the air has an effect on the central nervous system including dizziness, drowsiness, and headaches.”

A caller to our friends over at Townsquare Media in New Jersey are describing a, “solid wall of white fog” rising in the air.

We hope everyone is ok in New Jersey.

What Are The Uses Of Vinyl Chloride?

Due to the hazardous nature of vinyl chloride, there are no end products that use vinyl chloride in its monomer form. Vinyl chloride liquid is fed to polymerization reactors where it is converted from a monomer to a polymer PVC. Until 1974, vinyl chloride was used in aerosol spray propellant.
