There are some new census numbers out for Upstate New York.  It shows that more than 23,000 people have left the region since 2010.  Meanwhile, the New York City area has seen an increase of over 420,000 people during that same period.

So what's happening here in Central New York?   Numbers published by empirecenter.org show that the population of Oneida, Herkimer and Madison Counties have all shrunk between 2010 and 2016.

In Oneida County, there are 231,190 people who live here.  That's down by 3,699 in the past six years.   Herkimer County has seen a population loss of 1,855 persons between 2010 and 2016.  Their current population is 62,613.  And Madison County now has 71,329 people living there.  That's a decline of 2,123 since the 2010 census.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, Kings County, covering part of New York City has gained more than 124,000 people during the six-year period.  Closer to home, Albany County has seen a small increase in the number of people who live there.
