This urban legend is called the scariest one in New York. Have you heard of the creature known as "the Rake?"

"The Rake" is the story of a very haunting creature that has been spotted in areas all over the northeast, but seems to spend most of its time in the rural areas of New York. Some accounts say it looks sort of like a human mixed with a big dog, but sits or stands in weird positions (to the point some say it looks like it was hit by a car, or injured).

People who claim they have seen the Rake admit to having a variety of feelings. According to CreepyPasta,

Emotions ranged from extremely traumatic levels of fright and discomfort, to an almost childlike sense of playfulness and curiosity.

The legend states that anyone who looks the Rake in the eye becomes its victim. Multiple stories claim the Rake would come into people's houses as they were sleeping and it would sit or stand at the edge of a bed - Watching... waiting...
And then striking! Some people have claimed that they woke up in the middle of the night to find the creature staring at them.

Writings in journals, letters to friends and family, and other stories have been found from the Rake's victims. The writings are eerie and creepy with vivid descriptions of the creature's eyes...

...I see his eyes when I close mine. They are hollow. Black. They saw me and pierced me.

According to CreepyPasta, that was a journal entry from 1880 after a person saw the Rake. Many other records of the Rake tell the haunting stories of his victims fleeing the area, and others taking their lives (before the Rake could take theirs) after experiencing the terror brought on by the creature. One letter finds the victim praying for his friend after the creature spoke his name.

Another story tells of a woman who survived a run-in with the Rake, but her family wasn't so lucky. She woke in the middle of the night to find her husband staring at something at the end of their bed. She looked over and there it was. The creature. It stared at her husband before moving closer to him, closer until it was about a foot away. Then it darted out of their room and headed into her daughter's room. She screamed and ran after it - Found the light switch and saw blood. Her daughter had been badly injured and her last words were "He is the Rake." Later that night her husband left and drove into a lake.
