Just like spiders, snakes tend to come out and play in the warmer temperatures. Which snakes in New York are venomous and dangerous?

According to the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, luckily in New York, there are only three species of venomous snakes living in the wilds of New York. But remember, many other kinds may be found in the homes of private individuals and, occasionally, escapes do occur. The ones in the wild to watch out for are the timber rattlesnake, the massasauga , and the copperhead. All three are very uncommon.

The Timber Rattlesnake

This type of snake is found mainly in the southeastern part of the state, except Long Island and New York City. You may find some as far north as Lake George and also along the Southern Tier in western New York.

The Massasauga

Locally in Central New York, this is the snake to pay attention too. It's found northeast of Syracuse and west of Rochester.
