According to a recent survey, hospitals in the United States treat an average of about 11,500 injuries and medical emergencies a year related to shoveling snow. Shoveling is dangerous because it puts a lot of pressure on the heart and lungs, raising heart rates above recommended upper limits after only two minutes of work. On top of that, freezing temperatures also constrict blood vessels, further stressing the heart. Two-thirds of shoveling injuries occur to men, with more than half of the injuries resulting from the exertion. Other medical problems occur, of course, from slips and falls. If that isn’t a good enough excuse to not shovel then what is?
