New Central New York Area Code Announced

The 2nd area code for our area will be 680 and in use by 2017. This will include 18 counties in Central and Northern New York (Syracuse to the Canadian border).

There will be a seven-month period to prepare the network and an additional 11-month period that will allow consumers to use seven-digit and 10-digit dialing in the 315 region. Once the period expires, 10-digit dialing will be required, even for local calls according to auburnpub.

Syracuse.com reports The commission has said it might delay the implementation if a report due in October shows less risk of number exhaustion in area code 315.

In the meantime you should start including the area code when giving out your number or taking a number. It's being reported that a local call now will remain a local call and prices of phone calls, coverage areas, or other rates and services will not change due to the overlay.
