Paul McCartney says a Beatles reunion would have been inevitable if not for the passing of John Lennon and George Harrison. Even though the fab four had their differences, McCartney says they always played great when together. McCartney also recalls the time that he and Lennon almost performed together on Saturday Night Live. Sir Paul said Lennon suggested the two accept Lorne Micheals' offer to perform on the show:

"He (Lennon) said, 'We should go down, just you and me... We'll say, 'There's only two of us, we'll make half the money...' And for a second..," McCartney told Access Hollywood. - YahooNews.com

So why didn't the two Beatles reunite for one night? According to McCartney they were both enjoying a night off and decided not to go.
