It was surprisingly close at the end, but Jim Boeheim and his third-ranked Syracuse Orange were able to hold on for a 72-68 win over Detroit at the Carrier Dome on Monday night.

The Orange had a 19 points half-time lead, but the Titans got hot in the second half, forcing 'Cuse to hit some late free-throws to pull out the win.

Boeheim is just the third Division I Men's coach to win 900 games - behind Mike Krzyzewski (936) and Bobby Knight (902) - with all of them coming at Syracuse.

James Southerland had a game-high 22 points to lead the Orange (10-0), with Michael Carter Williams added 12 points and ten assists.

Always in coaching mode, Boeheim said after the game that 'we', meaning his players, thought the game was over, but said it wasn't, adding hopefully we learned 'it's never over.'

Ironically, Dave Bing - who is the Mayor of Detroit along with being Boeheim's former college roommate and teammate - was at the game to celebrate the the milestone with his longtime friend.
