Before The Jefferson Starship or The Starship, there was The Jefferson Airplane. They had their first hit in 1967 called Somebody To Love, and made their first appearance with Johnny Carson in 1968.

The group formed in San Francisco in 1967. Lead vocals were shared by Marty Balin and Gracie Slick. They changed their name to Jefferson Starship in 1974, Gracie Slick left from 1978 to 1981, Marty Balin left in 1979, he would be replaced by lead singer Mickey Thomas who sang lead on Elvin Bishops Fooled Around And Fell In Love. The groups name was shortened to The Starship in 1984. The group disbanded in 1990.  Jefferson Airplane would go into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1996. .
