Ahhhhh…the great debate about toilet paper.  Should the roll be inside, next to the wall, or outside, closer to the user?  I did a blog some months ago about it, maybe I should go back and look at it.  Oh wait, you mean there is actually a patent on how it should be used?

According to the patent, the end of the toilet paper should be on the outside.  Debate over.  I knew it!  Turns out it also the reason we are able to tear off perfect squares, according to the 1891 patent by New York businessman Seth Wheeler.

Here is what Wheeler says about his invention:

"My invention ... consists in a roll of wrapping paper with perforations on the line of the division between one sheet and the next, so as to be easily torn apart, such roll of wrapping paper forming a new article of manufacture.”

Now that this has been resolved, everyone can move on to other pressing concerns: single-ply or double-ply?
