The VW scandal could cost you as much as $5000. As many as 500,000 'clean diesel' vehicles have been sold in the US and as many as 11 million worldwide.

It's being reported the ripple effect of the VW scandal will be felt far beyond the headquarters in Germany. EPA fines could be as much as $37,500 per car and could grow larger as other countries get involved.

The cost to the owners of these cars will be in the resale value. Customers purchased these cars because they bought into the diesel technology. Better fuel economy, cleaner emissions than years ago and the 'green appeal.' Fortune Magazine says customers paid more for these cars.

VW owners of “clean diesel” vehicles will incur lost resale value as high as $5,000 per vehicle. Adding up all the cars affected, that puts the potential loss in the neighborhood of $55 billion.

There are more vehicles involved in this than we first realized according to CNN.com:

The U.S. models affected include the VW Jetta, Beetle and Golf from 2009 through 2015, the Passat from 2014-2015 as well as the Audi A3, model years 2009-2015. Volkswagen said Monday about five million VW branded cars are affected worldwide, including some Tiguan models. Other group brands such as Audi (2.1 million cars) and Skoda (1.2 million cars) are also involved. In total as many as 11 million vehicles may have been manipulated.
