Pretty much everywhere you look these days, you see folks slumped over their phones. I can’t say I’m not guilty of the practice myself, sometimes.

Most people just don’t realize the stress they are putting on their shoulders, because you just don’t feel the weight.

According to a new study published in Surgical Technology International, when you look at your phone, it’s basically the same as putting a 60 pound weight on your neck. Who’d have thought, right?

Let’s do some math…when your 12 pound head tilts down to look at the phone screen, the neck will become 27 pounds at 15 degrees, 40 pounds at 30 degrees, 49 pounds at 45 degrees and 60 pounds at 60 degrees.

The average American spends roughly 2 hours and 42 minutes on their phone, which means it’s like hanging 4 bowling balls from your neck and over time, this creates an awful lot of wear and tear on the neck, which could possibly lead to future surgeries. Yikes!

How do we solve this problem? Pretty simple really. Put down your phone for a while. I know, easier said than done, right? I would probably be spending less time on the phone if Candy Crush and Words with Friends ever went away.
