We're back at it! We have eight more cities and towns in Central New York, and we're going to see how common those names are across the United States.

Our first edition of "How Unique Are the Town and City Names in Central New York" looked into these eight places: Whitesboro, Oneida, Boonville, Herkimer, Cazenovia, Dolgeville, Cicero, and Westmoreland. We found that (out of those eight names), Oneida was the most common, with 12 other cities across the US that shared that name. Dolgeville on the other hand, only exists in one place, right here in New York.

Now, for part two (of this five-part series), we have eight more city and town names from Central New York that we're going to look into...

Rome

We knew this one was going to be popular. There are 17 other states that have a town or city named "Rome." In Wisconsin, there are actually three areas called Rome. Out of all the states, New York has the second biggest Rome with a population of 33,725 (according to the 2010 Census). The most-populated one is Rome, Georgia with 36,303 residents. These are the other states with a Rome:
- Alabama
- Georgia
- Illinois
- Indiana
- Iowa (one of the smallest "Romes," with a population of 117)
- Kansas
- Kentucky
- Louisiana
- Maine
- Mississippi
- Missouri (named after Rome, Italy not Rome, New York)
- Ohio
- Oregon
- Pennsylvania
- South Carolina
- Tennessee
- Wisconsin (the state with 3 "Romes")

New York Mills

Believe it or not, there's another state that has a city named "New York Mills." Crazy, right?! There is another New York Mills in Minnesota. But they are the only two in the country (and ours is a little bigger, but not by much).

Camden

This is another one we figured would be pretty popular, and it is. There are 22 other states that have a "Camden." Camden, New York is the fourth-biggest city with a population of 4,934 (according to the 2010 Census). BUT - That's only including the town of Camden. There is also a village of Camden. Here are the other states with a city or town of the same name:
- Alabama
- Arkansas (the second most-populated Camden in the US)
- California (actually has two areas named Camden)
- Colorado
- Delaware
- Illinois
- Indiana
- Maine
- Maryland
- Michigan
- Mississippi (doesn't have much, but does have a post office)
- Missouri
- New Jersey (the biggest Camden in the US)
- North Carolina
- Ohio
- Pennsylvania
- South Carolina
- Tennessee
- Texas
- Virginia
- Washington
- West Virginia

Mohawk

There are quite a few other states that have a city that shares the name "Mohawk." Actually, a total of 12 "Mohawks" in the United States, with two of them in New York. There's a Mohawk in Herkimer County (probably the one we most think of), and another one in Montgomery County. These states also have a Mohawk:
- Arizona
- Arkansas
- California (It was formerly known as "Mohawk Valley")
- Florida
- Indiana
- Michigan (located in the Upper Peninsula)
- Oklahoma
- Oregon
- Tennessee
- West Virginia

Canastota

This one surprised us. There is only one notable "Canastota" in the United States, and it's right here in New York. There happens to be a "Canistota" in North Dakota, but it's spelled differently so in our books, it doesn't count. In our first edition of "How Unique Are the Town and City Names in Central New York," we found there was only one Dolgeville in the US. Now, Canastota can be added to that list of one-of-a-kind.

Verona

Although a lot of cities that share the name "Verona" are named after Verona, Italy, we were still surprised at how many there were across the United States. This one has been the most popular name we've researched so far, as well. 23 other states have a city or town called Verona. These are the states:
- Arkansas
- California
- Georgia
- Illinois (founded by George D. Smith who named it after his birthplace Verona, NY)
- Indiana
- Kentucky
- Mississippi
- Maine (which actually just changed its name to "Verona Island" in 2004)
- Maryland
- Michigan (used to have two "Veronas," now there's only one)
- Missouri
- Montana
- New Jersey
- Nebraska
- North Carolina
- North Dakota
- Ohio
- Pennsylvania
- Tennessee
- Texas
- Virginia
- Wisconsin (there are actually two of them, the city is named after Verona, NY)
- Wyoming

Stittville

You could have guessed this town name wouldn't be so popular, but is it as uncommon as you think? "Stittville" is another one-of-a-kind place. The only one is in New York. This one can be added to the list with Dolgeville and Canastota. Also, there is a "Stittsville" in Michigan, but it has that extra "s" in there, so again, we're not counting it.

Schuyler

The last one we're going to look at this week is "Schuyler." There are three other states with a city or town named Schuyler. Schuyler, New York is the second largest with a population of 3,420 (according to the 2010 Census). Here are the other states that have an area with the same name:
- Nebraska (the largest with a population of 6,211)
- Pennsylvania
- Virginia

And that's our eight cities this week! Make sure you look for our next installment of "How Unique Are the Town and City Names in Central New York," when we look into another eight cities and see how common their names are across the United States. If you would like us to include your city or town in our list, just leave us a message in the "comments section" at the bottom of this page.
