The combination of wind and snow create treacherous whiteout driving conditions. Here're some tips to help get you to your destination safely.

When you're aware of whiteout conditions the best thing to do is not drive unnecessarily, but if you need to venture out give yourself lots of extra time. Here are some tips if you're caught in whiteout conditions.

  • See and be seen. If you can’t see others, they can’t see you. Make sure your headlights are on.
  • Be aware of vehicles around out. Increase the distance to the vehicle in front as you will need more room to stop if it does.
  • Be patient. Patience is a virtue in these circumstances. Avoid passing.
  • Stop if conditions get too bad. When you see vehicles disappearing into heavy snow or a whiteout, do not follow them into it. Find a place to pull completely off safely, put on your four-way flashers and sit it out.
