They say there is no cure for the common cold, but nobody said you have to suffer all the way through it, right? Take a look at most of your common cold medicines. What seems to be the key ingredient in most, aside from most of the children’s cold medicine?

Yep, it’s alcohol. That’s why a bit of whiskey could actually offer some relief.

Hot toddies, you’ve heard of them. In most cases they are made up of whiskey, honey, lemon juice, and hot water. These can certainly help with the lingering cold that many of us have this time of year. The hot water helps to relieve nasal congestion, similar to how hot chicken soup helps relieve that same symptom.

Got sniffles? Oh yeah, the whiskey helps with that as well as alcohol dilates blood vessels and makes it easier for your mucus membranes to deal with the infection.

Hold on there, it’s not time to hit the bar just because you have a cold. You know as well as I do that TOO much alcohol does not do your cold any good at all, trust me. Alcohol also is a diuretic, which means it pulls fluid from your body, and what do doctors tell you to do when you are sick? Yep, drink lots of fluids, so this is why I put the emphasis on a “BIT” of whiskey, not half the bottle.
