Forget the diet today! Enjoy a vanilla shake in honor of Vanilla Milkshake Day.

June 20th is National Vanilla Milkshake Day. The first time a milkshake was advertised was in 1885 and consisted of cream, eggs, and whiskey. In the 1900's a scoop of ice cream was added. By the 1930's malt shops were popping up everywhere and was a favorite spot for the teenagers.

Here's another interesting fact. The drugstore chain Walgreens is credited for the Malted Milkshake. Malted Milk was a mixture of evaporated milk, malted barley, and wheat flour developed for infants, but Walgreens started adding it to the milkshakes for the taste.

Here are a few of our favorite places for milkshakes.

Red Door Dairy Store in West Winfield

Mercer’s Dairy in Boonville

The Soda Fountain in Remsen.

Zems in Canastota

Stewarts
