There is one type of mosquito that can transmit the Zika virus that may migrate to Central New York.  The federal Centers for Disease Control has published a map that shows the potential range of the mosquito that includes most of New York State, including this area.

Dr. Mark Polhemus of Upstate medical University told Syracuse.com that the Asian Tiger mosquito, which can transmit the Zika virus could adapt to central New York's climate.   He said that the mosquito is already present in the New York City area.

Zika is now widespread in Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean islands. pregnant women infected with the virus can give birth to babies with severe brain defects.
