Herkimer College has a new weather station that will provide real-time data to be used for weather forecasting and decision making.

The New York State Mesonet Early Warning Weather Detection System was established in January of 2014 and consists of 125 standard and 17 enhanced stations throughout the state.

Herkimer College is a standard site consisting of a 33-foot high tower that measures temperature,  relative humidity, wind speed and direction and precipitation

Officials say the data will be used to support more accurate decisions in agriculture, emergency management and aviation.

The NYS Mesonet is designed, implemented and operated by scientists at the University of Albany, with support from the NYS Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services.
