Doom’s Public Reveal Unlikely Until 2015

The closed-door gameplay reveal of Doom at last week’s QuakeCon 2014 was done to help encourage fans to trust id Software, but its public reveal is still a long way off.

PC Gamer reports that the FPS formally known as Doom 4 was revealed last week at QuakeCon 2014 in order to restore faith in id Software, but that doesn’t mean we should be expecting this footage to be properly presented to the masses anytime soon. This is mainly because Doom is still in its early stages of development and it isn’t ready for a “formal announcement,” according to Pete Hines, Bethesda Softworks’ Vice President of PR and Marketing. QuakeCon goers were chosen to be the only ones to see its gameplay to rekindle interest in id Software’s flagship series, and Hines explained that we shouldn’t expect any proper footage of it until later on in 2015

“I try really, really hard for this to be a dev first, dev-lead thing,” said Hines. “We’re working with them to say, ‘How does this work? What do we want to show?’ And they’re like, ‘Look, we don’t want a stream to go up for a game that isn’t at the point where we would formally show it to the world, and now that thing is getting picked apart, and digested, and gone through frame-by-frame and getting nitpicked to death, when normally we wouldn’t be showing this to anybody at all.’”

“Next year is normally when I think we would’ve started,” said Hines, hinting at when we’ll see a formal unveiling. When asked on whether or not he thinks the stream will ever be posted online, Hines responded, “I don’t think there’s any way that’ll happen.”

Since QuakeCon is a convention that is completely oriented around id Software’s biggest titles, it would be a shame if there was yet another year where the con didn’t show anything new in terms of Doom. So its closed-door footage was revealed to douse the doubts con-goers had about id Software and Doom.
