A dog and cat were left out in the cold to freeze to death along Route 48 in the town of Lysander near Syracuse. While the cat succumbed to the cold, the dog was rescued by a hunter to found the abandoned animals.

The hunter called Lysander Dog Control Officer Dan Boccardo who said it was about 7 degrees outside when he arrived at the scene.

"The cat was frozen to death in the carrier and the dog was laying close to the carrier," Boccardo said.

Boccardo said the young, female dog was severely underweight and was very weak. She was able to walk, but had to be lifted into the truck, he said.

The Central New York SPCA in Syracuse took charge of the dog, named her Hope, and is nursing her back to health.
