After the tragic news of David Bowie's death came word his ashes were being spread in upstate New York. But why?

Bowie lived in the Catskill Mountains for the last few years. Rumors are his ashes will be scattered at his secret mountain retreat in Shokan. Locals would often see Bowie, his wife and daughter frequenting area's shops, restaurants and the local gym.

David Bowie owns Little Tonche Mountain, 64 acres in a secluded area above the hamlet of Shokan, just outside Woodstock. Bowie said he wanted a 'fantasy land' and that's what he got according to Hobartpulp.com:

Architecturally, it is almost an exact replica of the Indonesian-style villa he had constructed on the Caribbean island of Mustique in the late 80s; the original, with its layered streams and koi ponds, Javanese furniture, and rampant teak, barely fit anyone’s definition of a house—more than anything, it resembles a palace.

Allaire Studios are located at the top of a neighboring peak where he recorded 2 albums including Heathen.

R.I.P. David Bowie - a giant among the Allaire Studios family, who bought the property adjacent to us up here after he made two of his records here... A great loss for all... we shall miss thee...

A friend told The Daily Mail, the public may not know the location of Bowie's ashes but his family does.

After decades of frenetic city living, David finally found peace in the mountains and that's where I am sure some of his remains will go. David was very private in life and intended to remain so in death. But you can rest assured he told his family exactly where he wanted his ashes scattered.'
