Watch David Lee Roth Perform at the Summer Spectacular Under the Stars Benefit Show
It's been quite some time since Van Halen fans had any official indication of activity on the band front, and that doesn't seem likely to change anytime soon. But meanwhile, David Lee Roth is still just as comfortable as ever behind the mic — as evidenced in the above fan-shot footage, which captures the singer's set at the 2017 Summer Spectacular Under the Stars.
As the Van Halen News Desk reports, the invitation-only event was hosted by Saved by the Bell alum Mario Lopez, and attracted a celebrity guest list that also included an appearance from Demi Lovato. Roth, as the evening's musical headliner, delivered a set that made room for solo singles like his covers of "Just a Gigolo" and "California Girls" as well as the Van Halen classics "Ice Cream Man" and "Jump."
The annual event benefits the Brent Shapiro Foundation for Drug Awareness, founded by Shapiro's parents, Linell and Robert, after his drug-related death in 2005. According to the foundation's website, the organization devotes more than 90 percent of the funds raised directly to its outreach and volunteer programs — all part of its "vision to conquer alcohol and drug dependence by turning the fear, grief and helplessness caused from this disease into awareness, compassion and support while promoting awareness for the dangers of experimenting with alcohol and drugs."
While Van Halen remain on hiatus — and Roth remains in the wild — bassist Wolfgang Van Halen continues work on his long-gestating solo debut, which seems likely to be the next release from anyone currently in the lineup. You can check out an early 10-second clip from the record.
