Confirming recent rumors, David Bowie has announced a Jan. 8, 2016, release for his next studio album.

As previously reported, the new LP — Bowie's 25th studio effort — will be called Blackstar, a title shared by the theme song he contributed to the upcoming TV series The Last Panthers. According to a post published at Bowie's Facebook page, the Blackstar album is scheduled to arrive Jan. 8, 2016, his 69th birthday.

While the rumors may have been on target regarding Blackstar's existence, the Bowie camp has urged fans not to buy into "inaccurate reporting on the sound and content of the album" — presumably a reference to an article published by the Times UK in which an alleged insider described a "completely bonkers" record encompassing everything from Gregorian chant to electronic beats and Kraftwerk-style pop.

"Only the following can be confirmed," reads the post. "The single will be released on Nov. 20th and is not part of David’s theater piece Lazarus."

The Lazarus project, an adaptation of Bowie's The Man Who Fell to Earth, was announced earlier this year and is just one of several non-album projects he has in the works — a list that also includes contributing new music to the upcoming SpongeBob SquarePants Broadway show.

Notably absent from the Blackstar post was any mention of a tour in support of the album, which could be read as a confirmation of recent rumors suggesting Bowie has told members of his inner circle that he has retired from the road.
