Could ‘Looper’ Director Rian Johnson Tackle ‘Doctor Who’ Next?
The talk on everyone’s lips this week is both that of Rian Johnson’s “Joe Go Lev” sci-fi time-travel actioner ‘Looper,’ opening Friday, as well as Saturday’s pivotal ‘Doctor Who‘ that says goodbye to several fan-favorite characters. We’d even heard a bit about ‘The Hobbit‘ director Peter Jackson looking to try his hand at directing ‘Doctor Who,’ but what are the odds that Rian Johnson’s next big project could trade ‘Looper’s for the TARDIS?
While we recently had a chance to talk to ‘Looper’ director Rian Johnson about the trippy time-traveling film, another interesting point came up in a Reddit AMA, regarding future projects the director might have an interest in. Having worked in TV before directing both ‘Breaking Bad‘ and FX’s cancelled critical darling ‘Terriers,’ one fan asked if Johnson would ever move back to the medium. Speaking in the comments, Johnson put forth:
I’d love to do a Game of Thrones.
But what I’d really kill to try, although it would be terrifying because I’m such a big fan of it? Doctor Who.
Either series would have a pretty significant get if Rian Johnson were to direct an episode, though ‘Doctor Who’s eighth series in 2013 has already attracted a bit of buzz in that ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘Lord of the Rings’ magnate Peter Jackson might be looking to tackle an episode in New Zealand. Might ‘Doctor Who’ be simpler for both the series and the director, having a shared interest in time travel?
‘Doctor Who’ will air landmark episode “The Angels Take Manhattan” this Saturday on the BBC, while ‘Looper’ hits theaters this Friday. Check out both, and tell us what you think in the comments!
