Believe it or not, New York State is one of the least-expensive places to own and maintain a car.  As a matter of fact, it ranks 3rd on the list of states where it costs the least to own a car.   Only Hawaii and Ohio are listed as less expensive than New York for car ownership and maintenance.

But how much does it cost you to own and operate your car over a 5-year period here in the Empire State?  According to figures published by MSN, it costs $17,697 to have your car on the road for five years.  That is based on gas, sales tax, insurance and registration.  The website says we pay an average of $1,050 per year for insurance, $1,264 for gas, and $761 for maintenance.

The most-expensive state for car ownership is Wyoming.  Based on annual expenses, it costs over $31,000 to own a car for five years in that state.
