The Utica Comets with a little help from the Keeler Show on WIBX and the Utica Police Department will attempt to break a Guinness Book of World Records feat on Friday night at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.

Most of the work will have to come from the nearly 4000 fans on hand for the first AHL playoff games in more than 20 years, if they're going to break the record for the loudest crowd roar.  The game is currently sold-out.

The current record is held by the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League which set a world record on Sunday, September 29th, 2014 in Kansas City.  The record was logged with just 8 seconds remaining in the first quarter as the fan roar registered 142.2 dbA inside Arrowhead Stadium, in a game that saw the Chiefs knock off the New England Patriots 41-14.

Lt. Steve Hauck of the Utica Police Department will officiate the potentially record breaking moment with a certified DB Meter belonging to the Utica Police Department.

The game begins at 7:00 p.m. (but the Comets want everyone in their seats by 6:45) against Chicago.  Utica now leads the best of 5 games series 2-1.  The next 1 (or 2 games, if necessary) will be played at the Aud.

Hearing experts recommend wearing earplugs to avoid hearing damage on any sounds louder than 93.98 dbA.

According to 'MakeItLouder.com' here are some record breaking sounds that might surprise you:

  • The loudest human scream measured at a distance of 8 feet 2 inches = 128 dbA
  • A train horn = 135 dbA
  • The Who rock concert = 150 dbA
  • Boeing Jet airplane = 165 dbA
  • 300 mph Tornado = 240 dbA
  • Krakatoa Volcanic Eruption = 310 dbA
