It has been 10 years since the terrorist attacks in New York City, Pennsylvania, and Washington D.C. Here are several things going on locally in remembrance of 9/11.

September 1, 2011

Mohawk Valley Community College will host the lecture “A Tribute to 9/11” with LT. Mickey Kross and SSGT Kevin Hughes in the MVCC Theater.

FDNY Lt. Mickey Kross will talk about his survival of the collapse of the North Tower on September 11, 2001. He and 13 others were entombed under the debris and all14 were able to escape. Kevin Hughes will share his story of surviving the terrorist attack on the South Tower of the World Trade Center and his experience as one of the first U.S. troops to enter Iraq at the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

You will watch video of the attack and the ABC News/ Nightline feature and listen to these men talk about their remarkable stories.

Currently on display at Mohawk Valley Community College in the Information Technology Building is an exhibit of artifacts from the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack which will be on display until the end of September.

A 200 ton sand sculpture will show several scenes to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of 9/11 at the New York State Fair.

September 9, 2011

The Genesis Group will have their Annual Prayer Breakfast to honor the 10th Anniversary of 9/11 on September 9th at Hart’s Hill Inn in Whitesboro. The Keynote speaker will be Chris D. Lewis the Provincial Police Commissioner in Ontario, Canada.

The Dunham Public Library will host Reflecting on Our Darkest Hour: Remembering 9/11 on Friday Sept. 9th from 9:30am – 5:30pm. Visitors can view the movie ‘102 Minutes That Changed America’. Visitors can also leave a ‘note of remembrance’ with your reflections on this tragic day.

The Genesis Group has partnered with the “9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance” and will have a Remembrance Ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial on the Memorial Parkway in Utica at 8:30am. A Service Project will be held at the Parkway Recreation Center and at 2pm the Closing Remembrance Ceremony will take place at Hanna Park.

New York Mills will have 9/11 Ceremony and Silent March on September 11, 2011. Everyone is invited to participate. The silent march will begin at 6pm and will proceed down Main St. to the 9/11 Memorial where the ceremony will take place at 6:30pm.

Herkimer County Community College and the Ilion Fire Department will be hosting a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on September 11th at the Ilion Fire Department. At the ceremony, there will be the unveiling of a piece of steel girder from the World Trade Towers. The girder will be mounted in front of the firehouse. The Ilion Fire Department has received the girder in recognition of their personal who responded to New York City after the attack.

The Greater Utica Choral Society will have a free performance of the Requiem of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on Sunday, September 11th at 3:00 p.m. at Grace Church as a memorial tribute to the victims of 9/11. They will also remember those who suffered the loss of a loved one on that day locally.

The Whitesboro Volunteer Fire Department will hold a September 11th 10 Year Anniversary Remembrance event on September 11th. There will be a silent march with a lone bagpiper starting at 10:30am from the fire station and ending at St. Paul's Church for an 11am mass.

In honor of September 11th "Community Conversattion" will feature New York State Troopers Art Ellis and David Olney along with readings, recollections, and photographs that were made possible by SUNYIT's Cultrual and Performing Arts Committee and the New York Council for Humanities.
