Slay West stopped by the studio to get you thinking about Central New York Roller Derby.

Are you up for the challenge of 'roller derby?' Slay tells us about the challenging sport. She says roller derby isn't any more physical than other sports.  "Most women's only

kind of a combination of hockey and football, you'll see hits and penalties similar to hockey

opportunity get to actually physically hit someone actually hit someone so that's different than other sports but, it's pretty exciting. Most women who have played sports do like being able to have this opportunity."

Slay describes roller derby as "kind of a combination of hockey and football, and you'll see hits and penalties similar to hockey. The jammer is the point scorer, and she wears a helmet-cover with a star. Slay says  "Your teammates, who are called blockers, are trying to advance you through the pack if you're the jammer, and you get 1 point for every person on the opposing team that you lap."

They're  always recruiting which goes hand in hand with being in a small community vs. New York or Boston.  Their biggest recruitment push and training start in October. If you're interested in joining the team or just want some more info, you can contact Slay at CNYRollerDerby.com, find them on Facebook at Central New York Roller Derby or email them at cnyrd.recruitment.com. They're a member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), an international organization that governs our version of flat track roller derby.
