A Winter Storm Warning was issued by the National Weather Service located in Binghamton yesterday for the winter storm that meteorologists are calling Winter Storm Euclid.

The storm began by depositing more than six feet of snow in the Sierra Nevadas over the weekend before bringing heavy snow to the southern states on Christmas Day. After bringing snow to the Ohio Valley and the Great Lakes Winter Storm Euclid moved to the Northeast where the National Weather Service in Binghamton issued the Winter Storm Warning:

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 1 pm EST this afternoon.

  • Locations: The Southern tug Hill region, the Western Mohawk Valley, The Syracuse metro area, as well as the Cortland. Owego, and Towanda areas.
  • Hazards: Light to occasionally moderate Snow, with areas of blowing and drifting snow.
  • Accumulations: storm totals of 9 to 13 inches, with locally higher amounts in western Tioga County, and Western Bradford County. The snow will taper off to snow showers by mid morning with additional accumulations of one to three inches today.
  • Winds: north 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. Becoming Northwest.
  • Impacts: difficult travel expected this morning with snow covered roads and areas of blowing and drifting snow.

A number of municipalities in Central New York, including the city of Utica, issued orders to residents that all vehicles be moved off the streets on Wednesday night (12/26) for plowing purposes.

Although there were a few car accidents, the travel advisory limited the number of incidents and most were minor. Over-night accumulations left morning travel difficult for many areas resulting in cancellations and closings.
